What is Trichology?

Trichology is the science of the hair and scalp, covering everything from structure and function to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that affect them. The word itself comes from the ancient Greek word for hair, "trikhos," and the practice has a long and established history.

Trichologists work through a careful, systematic process to identify what is causing a problem and recommend the most appropriate course of treatment. This is not a complementary therapy or an alternative to conventional medicine. The diagnostic approach and the treatments used sit much closer to orthodox medicine, and while trichologists are not medically qualified, the training involved includes a solid grounding in medical knowledge.

Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss can happen for a wide range of reasons, and two people experiencing the same symptoms may have very different causes behind them. This is why identifying the root cause is such an important first step before any treatment is considered.

Some of the most common factors include hormonal changes, which can be triggered by pregnancy, menopause or thyroid imbalances, ongoing stress or a significant period of physical or emotional strain, nutritional deficiencies particularly in iron, ferritin, vitamin D and protein, certain medical conditions and medications.  Genetic hair loss can also affect both men and women.

In many cases, more than one factor is involved, which is why a thorough and personalised assessment matters so much.

During your initial consultation, Olena will take the time to look at your hair and scalp in detail, discuss your health history and lifestyle, and work through the possible causes systematically. The aim is to give you a clear understanding of what is happening and honest, straightforward guidance on what your next steps might look like.  This might be a trichological treatment plan, a referral to your GP, or a combination of both.

Trichology FAQs

What is a trichology consultation and what does it involve?

«

A trichology consultation is a detailed one to one assessment of your hair and scalp. During your appointment, Olena will examine your scalp closely, discuss your hair loss or scalp concerns, and take a thorough history covering your health, diet, lifestyle and any treatments you have had in the past. The aim is to build a clear picture of what is happening and why, before making any recommendations.

How is trichology different from seeing my GP about hair loss?

«

GPs play an important role, and in some cases we will recommend you visit yours as part of your treatment plan. However, a trichologist specialises specifically in hair and scalp conditions and can often spend more time exploring the detail of your situation than a standard GP appointment allows. The two approaches work well alongside each other rather than in competition.

Do I need a diagnosis before I book?

«

No. You do not need a referral or an existing diagnosis to book a consultation. Many clients come to us unsure of what is causing their hair loss, and working out the cause together is exactly what the consultation is for.

How long does a consultation take?

«

A first consultation typically takes around an hour. This allows enough time for a thorough assessment and a proper conversation about your concerns and your options.

Will I leave with a treatment plan?

«

In most cases, yes. Where the cause is clear and falls within the scope of trichological treatment, Olena will discuss a plan with you at the end of your appointment. In some situations, further investigation such as blood tests through your GP may be recommended first, and your plan will follow once those results are available.

What if my hair loss cannot be treated by a trichologist?

«

Not every condition is curable, but many can be managed effectively. If your situation requires input from a GP or medical specialist, Olena will let you know clearly and help you understand the most appropriate next steps. You will never be left without a clear direction forward.
